Turkey has been the target of a series of terrorist attacks over the past years. Kurdish militants dubbed by Turkey as terrorists and the Islamic State are the two main perpetrators of attacks that have shocked the coutry. While the centuries old conflict with the Kurdish minority in the south east of the country has only recently turned hot again, the IS has taken its fight to Turkey more recently after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to get involved militarily in northern Syria against the Islamist organisation.

The most recent attack just after a football game in Istanbul on the weekend killed at least 38 people. The Turkish government initially blamed the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons TAK, a break-away splinter group of the Kurdish Worker’s Party PKK for the bombing, which later came out istelf and assumed responsibility.
